Fishing Log #010

FUGU Friend of Foe
The blowfish or pufferfish are very commonly caught in Japan as other tropical regions.

One day I was lucky enough to catch this fella. A Red-eye Fugu. He didn't put up much of a fight when caught, but his shear bulk made the landing difficult. He got his name from his distinctive red eyes(a few too many hot sakes the night before?) I pulled him out of the water and rolled him around a bit. He didn't make the usual chirping sounds that fugu often do. After 'getting to know each other' I plopped him back into the water, gently. He waved good-bye with his soft fins and I felt content to having made another friend in the sea.

A curious point: when I talked about my encounter with my red-eyed buddy of the sea back at the harbor the fish monger told me that it was a waste to have released him. A red-eyed fugu was a rare case and is considered a delicious entree at any sushi shop. A fugu fish shop would pay top dollar for such a large one I had described! I considered a moment, but could not help feel grateful that I had abetted his escape. I could never eat a red-eyed fugu!
